Three Ways To truly Rethink Church in NYC

I’m not sure how I’m feeling about the new United Methodist advertising campaign.

Fellow blogger  and UMC deepthinker Dan Dick calls it revisionist.  A Vandy student wasn’t as polite about it and told him that the ads lack credibility and  “there’s not one authentic thing in anything we watched.  It seems fake…”

To be fair, I have been around United Methodists that are truly rethinking church  Just not enough.   Walk into a UMC on any given day and and chances are that there isn’t much rethinking going on.

Anyways, I saw the above press release on Twitter.  It looks like a handful of UMCers tommorow are going to take the RETHINK CHURCH movement to the mean streets of New York City and do things like “opening car doors, hailing cabs, passing out dog treats…”

Instead of merely focusing on random acts of kindness, I would suggest the practicing of some good old Testament prophetic acts of justice.  Here are three ideas to get them  started:

1.  Do an Abbey Hoffman style raid on Wall Street; not too different from turning the tables over…

I never performed for the media. I tried to reach people. It was not acting. It was not some media muppet show. That is a cynical interpretation of history. […] Guerrilla theater is probably the oldest form of political commentary. The ideas just keep getting recycled. Showering money on Wall Street brokers was the TV-age version of driving the money changers from the temple.

2.   Go hang out with Rev. Billy. Or Jay Bakker.

Rev. Billy is a performance artist and star of What would Jesus Buy?.  Rev. Billy  and the Church of Stop Shopping choir has taken their message to the streets of New York for years now, always offering humorous confrontation with both our  consumeristic culture  and corporate greed.

Jay Bakker is the son of Jim and Tammy Faye of 80’s televangelism scandal fame.  After battling through drug issues, Jay has gone on  to found an inclusive and loving church. His journey can be seen on the TV show One Punk Under God.

If United Methodists are interesting in actually rethinking their churches–they would both be good folks to talk with.

3.  Host a worship service in the middle of Central Park and apologize for the theological failures of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

These two men are United Methodists. We owe New York and the entire world an apology. We United Methodists have simply failed the world in spiritual formation. The worst President and Vice President in aleast a generation and they  are (nominal) United Methodists.

  1. Nice post. Get radical, take it seriously, and do something, even if controversial. Maybe if we could wake up and see where real rethinking is already going on, change wouldn’t be far behind. Keep pushing the envelope, friend.

    • How to maintain this historic church in this pastor’s own way even if Jesus already left from it; He could not stay anymore as it too stinky elders and many power seekers. The church has been the target for looting the trust fund under the illegally elected elders, church officers and trustees. The ones tried to protect the church money according to the rules, were accused as mass murderers and placed them with innocent ones on the trial at a full jury. Pastor Won Tae Cha and his group come to the court to support the fake case. Even the bishop met with the judge as if the case was true.
The superintendent knows the truth. Rev. Chul Woo Chang knows the truth. But all the liars do not tell who met with the judge. They do not audit the fund since decided in July 2007. This historic church is the control of the mobster Methodist Koreans. Who can drive them out? so that Jesus could come back to us.

It is going to spend $20 million dollars to sell Jesus, brand name, Rethink Methodist. Why do they spend the money so cheap way? Just go into dirty churches and drive the crooked clergies and power hungry elders. Officers and recover the stolen God’s money.

Then good people and Jesus will come back. What do you think? Anybody home in UMC?

  2. By all means be prophetic! Make a “statement!” In a word, go theatrical! It’s creative! It’s fun! It gets the juices flowing. And it gets the attention from the media. That is so unlike mundane ministry such as literacy, mentoring, feeding, sheltering, comforting, healing, etc. Those don’t work well in a sound bite media. No go theatrical. That gets camera time.

In fact when it comes to speaking truth to power, get a whip. That way you’ll have what you need when the time comes to start swinging! As modeled in Scripture there is a time to start swinging. Maybe, just maybe if one is going to be a bit of a swinger, then maybe, just maybe one needs to be at least close in heart to the first Swinger if one is to treat supposed bad boys to a similar taste of the bloody end of a lash. Otherwise someone might mistake you for just another judge using a jawbone to give someone a beating.

Yes speak truth to power. Speak plain truth to those in power. The lion has roared. Who can but prophesy? Speak without any holding back. Speak to theological failure and moral compromise. Speak to a callous disregard for the fundamental rights of people. Speak to the heartless denial of responsibility to respond to the most basic needs of people who have no voice to speak for themselves. In the face of such injustice, a silent prophet is rightly thought complicit.

Get a whip and go theatrical. It may be that later someone will more effectively explain the nuances of historical theater so that a public largely uninformed by Christian conscience will understand that they have stood in the presence of prophets. Otherwise they may think they have only been treated to a clip of political theater. Operation Rescue has demonstrated how effective political theater is in ministering the love, mercy and grace of God in Christ to pregnant women and abortionist. Of course if someone is traumatized, well these things happen. When speaking truth to power someone is bound to get hurt. Bush and Cheney are of course fair game. After all “they are (nominal) United Methodist.” The rub is that they are no longer in office. The rub is that the current administration is fully worthy of the most extreme prophetic exposure, challenge, criticism and condemnation for their personal and public disregard of that most basic of human rights. Maybe the difference is that they are not United Methodist. Maybe the difference is that they only want to keep protect the innocent from being punished with a baby. Or maybe the problem is that the prophets of human rights have lost their voices. Maybe just as problematic is the ungolden silence that fills the empty void left by these speechless prophets. Standing in the dock with those who have no Christian conscience, this silence is the indictment of their complicity in a holocaust denied. A Prophet once said that absent the shouts of the crowd, stones would cry out. It’s time for the stones to cry for those who have no voice.

  3. Doing good is great but the only way to rethink is to return to the old ways of the original Methodist, that is the bible,
share Jesus to the unchurch that is the great commision that God said “go & make disciples of all men”.
A true regenerated men will surely make this world a better place to live.
Jesus said “you must be born again” John Wesley said the same thing.

    Dear Bishop Jeremiah J. Park:

Current and earlier events need the attention of your office because they will test the meaning of Christian values and of honor among Koreans.
Recently, you advocated, No torture, and with other religious luminaries you have marched to the United Nations to protest against the torture and abuse of suspected terrorists held at U.S. facilities in Guantanamo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. However, why have you not condemn the torture and abuse of the innocent members within your church?
Unwittingly it seems to appear the double standard of morality in the episcopacy as you overlooked the torture agony within a Methodist church.
In any event, the church should not be let alone in a Mafia image under your jurisdiction.
More specifically, Mr. Steve Park, and other church officers, had deliberately and consistently tortured and abused my family for many years while the church remained silent. He and his church underlings used the church’s name and trust fund to malign my family and me in order to rid of us from the church. It was to cover up the looting of the church money.
For instance, for one of the three frivolous lawsuits, Mr. Park falsely accused my son and me that we planned to kill him, his family, his attorney, and other church members in one of his court depositions – all in Church paid perjuries TO TORTURE THE INNOCENTS.
12 A He said watch out, you asshole,
13 Specifically said you asshole, you watch out, if
14 You don’t watch your step; I’m going to kill you.

5 A I’m going to kill your whole family
6 Q That’s what Dr. Sone said to you?
    7 A Yes.
    P. 62; 9-17, 21-23.
    9 Q You’re claiming that Dr. Sone
10 threatened to kill you and your whole family?
    11 A, Yes.
Sone, who threatened to kill me and other church members.”
    P. 90; 10-13. Paragraph 5 of Park’s affidavit.

    Page 148; 9-21

10 Chae Sone’s son, walked into my defense
11 lawyer’s office using profanities, like, you know
12 fuck you and these were the words that were
13 relayed to me, you asshole, I’m going to kill you,
14 everybody in sight, kill you and everybody in
15 sight and he chuckled when he called me, he said
16 there’s a little lunatic running around here, he
17 claims to being his son, and that’s how I got this
    18 name,

    Page 76; 13-16.

His language indicates a corrupt sub-culture of so called Christians today,
a shame. You can see what kind church is ours? Church officer Park’s lies:

13 Q I would like you to tell me exactly
14 What you say Chae Sone said to you.

15 A “He said fuck you and asshole on a
16 routine basis , that’s basically what he said, day
17 In and day out. ..”

    Page 78; 11-21

    11. Q Do you recall what the first thing he
    12. Said to you was?
    13. A “Yes. Curses.”
    14. Q Tell me exactly. This is?
15 A “F you and F you, you know, asshole, you
16 know, you better watch out your step,”

    Page 86; 12-17

8 A “He said watch out, you asshole,
9 Specifically said you asshole, you watch out, if
10 You don’t watch your step; I’m going to kill you.
    11 That’s very specific. I can’t get much more
    12 Specific than that.

    p. 65; 3-10

5 Q Did you ever report it to the police?
    6 A No I did not.
    7 Why is that?
8 A Because I tried to do it peacefully.
9 Q Dr. Sone threatened to kill you. Do you
    10 Realize that’s a criminal offense?
13 Q Why didn’t you call the police about a threat to you and your family?
23 A “Once again I knew the man. I wanted to resolve it amicably. So I did not want to get either the police or the legal system.”

    P. 61; 5-7

5 A “I’m going to kill your whole family.”
6 Q That’s what Dr. Sone said to you?
    7. A “Yes.”

    P. 62; 9-17, 21-23.

    9 Q You’re claiming that Dr. Sone
10 threatened to kill you and your whole family?
    11 A “Yes.”
12 Q When did he threaten to do that?
13 A “He did it on several occasions. I do
14 remember several occasions very specifically. I
15 think it was like 1998.
    21. “MR. POVMAN 1998 and you said
    22. there were other times?”
    23. “Yes.”

    (Mr. Povman lied too)

Furthermore, he substantiated his assertion that more than 10 persons had witnessed our threats to murder. His witnesses included Reverend Wontae Cha, Y. S. Kim, K. D. Shin, Y. H. Lee, Y. J. Kim, D. J. Chun, Paul Choi, Y. J. Kwon, and I. C. Lee. They are all liars and mugging Jesus.
Rev. Cha is a good colleague of yours according to information.
Because of his false allegations, my son and I were on trial at the New York State Supreme Court in Nassau County. He used the church’s funds to finance his lawsuit against us. In his lawsuit, Mr. Park also demanded $4,000,000 in damages, while pushing us into the jail as felons.
His lawsuit had nothing to do with the church and was simply a personal vendetta against us. My only offense against Rev. Cha, Mr. Park and others was to strictly observe my fiduciary duty as the chairman of the Board to protect the church’s Building Fund. Nevertheless, according to the court records, officials from the church hierarchy and Steven Park had deceived the judge as if the case was a church-related during an ex-parte conference.
Now, Bishop Jeremiah J. Park must be responsible to identify the persons who were at the secretive meeting with the judge. He must investigate all and any conspiracy against the church and its members. The bishop’s actions matter much with the prestige of the episcopacy.
The year 2008 is the 87th anniversary of the Korean United Methoidst Church and Institute. Bishop Jeremiah J. Park, Reverend Won Tae Cha, Steven Park, Young So Kim and other such characters one day must come to the church and faithfully explain to the worshippers for the justification of the looting for either personal gain or criminal racketeering against the innocent loyal members. At 88th, no dignitaries showed up, even the bishop. In this church, Jesus was mugged by so called clergies, elders and senseless others since long time ago.
The cowardly leadership owes an explanation to the fellow church members about the mismanagement of church finances: For example, an $180,000 building renovation contract lost for nothing. It only enriched the related parties. Or, another example when the chairman of the board of trustees embezzled $70,000 he is awarded with church money to pay for his legal fees and for part of his embezzlement. Also his faction paid the fines for the sanctions and the contempt of court with the trust fund although they had to pay. Another irony is Methoidst Mission Fund donated $50,000 to the trust as if an incentive to the looting.
The judge and NYS Attorney General advised to recover the funds from the abusers. But, why anyone in the church leadership has done anything about these malfeasances?
Now, the time has come to your office to clarify the ultimate moral issues.
On July 15, 2007, the church decided to hire a certified public accountant (excluding Korean CPA) to audit the church finances starting from year 2000. The audit is to determine if any fraud has occurred. But, since then, Reverend Chang, the current pastor, who is a friend of yours according to information, has not yet started it.
On December 14, 2008, the Church Council decided Mr. Hyun Jong Kim’s proposal to recover the abused trust fund.

Thus, the church loudly spoken again to Rev. Chul Woo Chang, that is,

“The demand of return of the abused fund
is not anti Church or anti Christ.”

Recently Rev. Chang reinstated some of the purged elders by his mentor Rev. Cha without dignity in his mentor’s way, destructive to Jesus image…

The church must recover the stolen funds from Mr. Park and the embezzlers. Perhaps, the church may file an insurance claim for the stolen funds so that the insurance company can compensate them. But, you, the bishop, must enforce church rules and order to help this church recover financially as well as morally. Otherwise, the church has no standing as a light house to the dark world Now, remember that any decent mind cannot allow our historic church to be built on the foundation of the age-old scandals, but on the rock. Most of all, the church should be liberated from evil capitulation still in power. If Mr. Park and others like him have succeeded to scapegoat the church scandals on an innocent family, then they would have said, Halleluiah!! The church should be maintained as a house of prayer, but a den of robbers. (Matthew 21; 13)
In any even, should not let them build a temple of Judah.
Some wise guys sitting on the top, navigating through the Judas’s conspirators’ roadways, are bragging the ones’ misfortunes in the church. Jesus’ church degenerated into the human garbage dump of the Korean church as the chronic phenomena naturally revealed. Where is our faithful leadership – Jesus is over commercialized for propaganda to bran wash the naive seekers.
RETHINK if Jesus in where mobsters are dancing round with Madoff Champaign.
Without any further delay, you must recognize that the Korean United Methodist Church and Institute has been under the control of the spiritually-dead clergies and criminals who are filled with demons, falsehoods, hatreds, and deception. It does appear to be a moral crisis of the Korean Church, the NY Annual Conference, and, perhaps, the United Methodist denomination.
I am praying for your spiritual victory in good faith and for the renewal of our historic church. The Book of Discipline guarantees open meetings and free speech. Why can’t we have an open debate for the renewal at the church or a public media? The congregation wants your spiritual leadership as the bishop of the NY Annual Conference as well as the top church leader of the Korean immigrant Christian community.
Please let me remind your office that it is my duty and mission to continuously protect the church’s common interests, according to the church’s rules and the Christian teachings. That is my only way to seek justice and to restore our family name as I have learned from the church throughout my life.

Alas! The church is spiritually, morally broken as it is now.

    Sincerely yours in Christ,

    Chae S. Sone and family

Subject: Building Funds Questions Korean Church

    Dear Bishop:
This all sounds as though the leadership of our church has handled a difficult situation in a poor way. Are these matters of injustice in the claims of those who cry out about the fraudulent use of building funds and trust funds of the Korean Church in New York? Real leaders not only do things right… but in the critical points of decision making…do the right thing. What is the right thing in his matter? It is an embarrassment to the whole community of faith.

Subject: A petition to Bishop Jeremiah J. Park to recover misused Church money
Dear Brother in Christ Bishop Jeremiah J. Park,
I have received this petition which is addressed to you and only calls for an investigation and justice. If the accusations are true, the situation deserves a resolution. No one should be victimized – especially not by their own church. I don’t know the situation, do not know if any of the accusations are remotely true, but have witnessed similar cases. An impartial investigation could bring interesting unknown facts to your attention.
    GOD bless you!

On 12/14/08, at the church meeting, a resolution passed to recover the abused trust fund as proposed by Mr. Hyun Joong Kim, that was long overdue since Assistant Attorney General Nathan Courtney’s order to recover them. But he delayed it up to now in an excuse that it would be costly for the church to recover.
Now the church has spoken loudly again that the demand of return of the abused money to the church is not Anti church or anti Christ’. It is right thing to do for the church officers to recover Gods money from the abusers.
Now his opposition to the return of the abused fund found to be morally wrong as a pastor as the church formally legally, rightfully, demanded to recover them.
Now the audit is imperative. It should be done as soon as possible without further delay as it matters with the image of this historic church.

    Chin, Superintdent
    June 10, 2009

    Rev. Noel Newton Chin, Superintdent
    Metropolitan District, UMC
    New York, NY

    Rev. Chul Woo Chang
    Chairman Joon Ki Kim
Korea United Methodist Church and Institute

Dear Superintendent Rev. Noel N. Chin:

    Greetings in Christ.

As I understand you are coming to our church to preside over the church meeting to decide on the matters of the new building.

We want the proposals in my letter to be added to your agenda for the meeting.

For this occasion,I would like to remind you to consider the following issues that you are very familiar with them which have been raised for sometime.

All the problems originated from a reaction in failure to follow the rule “Honor the donors’ will,” to protect the trust fund.

This negative reaction by Rev. Won Tae Cha and his underlings purged the elders and stewards and church officers to form his own faction to control the Building Trust Fund. He and the superintendent Carol Cox and others well coordinated the destructive process for more than a decade.

The successors of Rev. Cha are following their established policy for the church. Rev. Chul Woo Chang openly stated to the public, “Rev. Cha is my mentor,” at his inauguration.

It was an open insult to those who purged and disgraced by Rev. Cha.

Among the issues, I wish to point out the fact that his group put my son and me on the trial at a full jury at the New York State Supreme Court, Mineola, New York, with the false charges,
that I and my son was going to kill Steve Park, his family, his lawyer and other church members. On the third day of trial, Hon. F. Dana Winslow revealed some one from the Episcopacy or the Annual Conference met with him and confirmed that
the murder charges related with the church affairs.

Rev. Cha, Steve Park and others put us in Michael Vick’s dog house paid by the Korean United Methodist Church.

We wanted that the Bishop Jeremiah J. Park, the Superintendent and Rev. Chul Woo Chang should tell us who and why anyone from the United Methodist Church did meet with the judge for the case that had nothing to do with the church.

The only the relation was the fact that she illegally released the fund to finance the ugly Taliban like lawsuits.

So far everyone is stone walling even though by this time the facts should be known to them and other high ranking church officers.

I want to hear from you this time. As the Superintendent, you
oversee our church that propagates the word of
God as a servant of God. As you are in a leading position, you
should know who met with the judge.

The church paid for these ugly fake lawsuits to treat us more
cruelly than Vick’s dogs in violation of every aspects of human decency with the church funding, irrelevant to your confessed faith.

Since the church was taken over by Rev. Cha’s group, they
freely used the Building Trust Fund for their fake lawsuits and
others. Only one case of $70,000.00 embezzled by Paul Choi
supposed to be restituted. You as the Superintend should report
to the church council if it is in the repayment process

Our family has tried to awake the church leaders. In 2006 annual
conference at Hofstra University, I tried to demonstrate in the conference hall. But I was denied.
Two mornings I demonstrated outside the campus on the
sidewalk of Hempstead Turnpike to awake the church leadership.

On June 26, following the Conference, according to the advice
of considerate Dr. Lounge Rouse met with you at your office. At
the meeting Rev. Chul Woo Chang also appeared although I did
not expect his presence. We expected to hear our advice.
But you did not say anything and just tried to quote some Bible
verses. It seemed to be meaningless in this case as clergies failed
to follow the church rules and ethics based upon the

I understood that the Bishop often wrote to you on the matters.
And I question if you replied to him. You said, “No.”

You mentioned the New York State Assistant Attorney General
Nathan Courtney was in your office to question about the abuse
    of the trust fund.

Sp I explained to you more than two hours about the scandalous
church events. I demanded the abusers should return the stolen
money to the church according to the church rules.

At the moment, Rev. Chul Woo Chang, said

“Demand the return of the abused church money is
    anti church and anti Christ.”

He insulted me as such at a clergy meeting. Once I indicated to him, his words were like spitting unto the face of Christ.

During Rev. Cha’s time, the trustees abandoned certain bank
accounts without timely renewal. When Ms. Kwang Hee Kim became the chairwoman she bravely recovered the lost fund with a high cost from the State of New York. Imagine what the nine member trustees did do for trust funds and the church duty except busily funding the brutal lawsuits to send us to jail with the false murder charges. Hypocritical trustees!! Like a satanic joke.

Ms. Kim soon replaced by Mr. Hyun Joong Kim. The show

The Superintendent and the Bishop knew all the stories
but did not do anything about them. Rather now the Bishop
employed Rev. Cha as his emissary to visit other Korean
churches, according to information. What a Jesus fraud is this?

July 15, 2007, the church council passed Ms. Kim’s proposed audit of the church fiancé from 2000 without Korean CPA.
At the moment, Rev. Chang said he would do it with two other people. But he is stalling it up to date, nearly two years.

Chang reistated some of the purged elders by his mentor Rev. Cha. Sensible purged elders left the church at the time. Most of these remaining guys were in support of the looting, lawsuits or kept quiet, with damaging false affidavits, demonizing us to fit to their taste in hatred.

Without redeeming by Rev. Cha, reinstituting these people to elders seems to be contemptuous to the dignity of the eldership, only purpose is to strengthen his organization, virtually alienating members from Christian fellowship and Christian teachings.

Thus, the church seemed to have been mugged again by the smart guys

In this situation of moral decay, the church should try to truly recover the stolen church money first. The Assistant Attorney General and the Judge so ordered.

You are going to preside over the matters of new church construction at 25 ft wide plot. Such construction in this moral climate makes the church building undignified. All those who involved first repent their criminal associations with this group. And start the audit and restitute the stolen building trust funds before building the church. When you do a proper auditing, a larger building could come to us as faithful reward.

Otherwise, they are building “A temple for Judah.”

We pray for you and the Bishop to recover the stolen funds because of the clergy’s negligence, and restore law and order in the Korean United Methodist Church and Institute in good faith.

Do you think Jesus is such a dumb guy to listen to your empty preaching? We want to believe all stupid are not created equal.
Rev. Chang’s mentor is so destructive to this church that his preaching does not confirm our traditional faith in his shadow. The church must stop the double crossing mentor. Our mentor is Jesus Christ.

This letter is only partial reflection of the tragic failures of the United Methodist Church. Do you know why America is sinking so fast? Because of the church’s corruption. We must come back to God.

    We would appreciate your response.

    God bless you.
