John 3:16 and the Rainbow Man

Today’s lectionary  readings (4th week in Lent, Year B) included John 3:16.   This verse has perhaps become the most famous verse in the bible.  For better or for worse .  My vote is for the worse.

The actual  verse goes something like this: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

And we might have the Rainbow Man to blame for it.  Check out the clip below, but Rainbow Man had a conversion experience involving a late night televangelist and his take on the soon-to-be apocolypse.   Rainbow Man spent a good portion of the 80’s and 90’s going to sporting and cultural events and holding up scripture signs, normally “John 3:16.”

When his act got stale, Rainbow Man started releasing stink bombs to warn people that the end war near and that they needed to be saved.  And then he took a maid hostage and is now spending his life in prison.

Rainbow Man is not saying anything different than the big-time  (and little-time) rightwing preachers, he is just took their message very seriously.

  1. This media hound didn’t see the disconnect between his actions and his beliefs. Self righteousness can taken too far. Often people who are a lengend in their own mind can be dangerous.
